Preparing Your Car or Van for Sale

When you decide to sell your car or van there are various things you can do a little to no cost to you that can help to ensure a quick, successful sale.

• Check your oil level and make sure it is full.
• Top up all fluid levels: water and/or other coolants. Windscreen wiper fluid, etc.
• Check your tyre pressure and replace worn or damaged tyres.
• Remove any debris to make the engine bay appear clean and well looked-after.

Cleaning your car or van can greatly increase your chances of selling it, here’s what you’ll need:

• Car Shampoo
• Sponge
• Bucket or Hose
• Leather Chamois
• Car Wax or Polish
• Window Cleaner and Cloth
• Vacuum Cleaner
• Low-gloss Cleaner

Avoid using products that aren’t specifically make for cleaning cars (ex. washing up liquid) as these might cause rust and other damage.

Interacting with Buyers

Never let the buyer go out on a test drive alone, there's a risk they won't come back. Check they have adequate insurance cover, otherwise you could be liable for any accidents they may have.

Never leave the keys in the ignition when swapping seats or leave the car with the buyer still in it for any reason. Be wary of any buyer who attempts to cause this situation.

Often times, a buyer will want to pay for a third-party inspection of your car or van in order to verify the information you have listed in your advert. This is becoming common practise and should not surprise you.

Haggling

Buyers will inevitably want to haggle about the price of your car or van. Be firm, but not unreasonable. Set a price beforehand and but decide how much you are willing to drop the price before you put it up for sale. Once you and the buyer agree on the price, don’t forget to write a receipt for both you and the buyer, stating the car or van is being sold, and make sure you both sign and date both copies of it.
