Pair large wood ritual tribal choppers with carved elephants dark wood , these are real nice and would polish up but leaving these just as found out of estate sale ( came with an African brass wall decoration which I am listing separately ) . Very tactile , not sure on what type wood they are but is very dark but has lighter grain in places and a real shine if polished .
Had a suggestion these were possibly used in ritual dances as copies of clevers used for wait for it ...chopping up big animals for food ....hence the size and shape ...like a clever we would see down the butchers ...only these have elephants on them so no guessing that they weren`t used for lamb chops . Some sort of ritual dance to say keep the food coming might have seen these being waved around 150 years ago when that was an ok thing to do .
Sadly the carved elephants on the handles have damage with legs missing but I`m guessing these are over 100 years old so to be expected and doesn't really detract from what they are . The massive chopper blades are really good condition .
Make great interior decoration wall pieces but really are collector pieces of tribal Africana .
Came with another interesting piece of unusual antique Africana I have listed separately you may like to take a look at
