Description:

Join Dusk Till Dawn Events for night of ghost hunting inside the reputedly haunted Charlton House in Greenwich London.

This is a well-known haunted location for many ghost hunters who return time after time to investigate its creepy interior. There are thought to be several spirits and ghosts residing inside the house and it is said to be so haunted, that even the daytime staff working here will not venture into certain parts of the building alone, even during daylight hours!

Brief History

Charlton House is iconic to the Greenwich area and has a long and varied history, once a fine manor house it is said to be one of the finest examples of Jacobean architecture in England.

Built by the crown for Prince Henry, Sir Adam Newton, Dean of Durham, the property was built in 1607 of red brick with stone dressing, housing an "E"-plan layout. The interior featured a great hall, chapel, state dining room, saloon and gallery.

In 1658 the estate was purchased by Sir William Duice who lived at the house in great style. William Duice made additions and improvements to the house and continued to live there until his passing.

An additional wing was added to the house by Norman Shaw in 1877. The house and grounds were used as a hospital during World War I and were bought by the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich in 1925. The Chapel Wing was bombed during the Blitz. The wing was then rebuilt, consequently with bricks that did not match due to the post war period at that time.

Ghosts and Activity

Paranormal activity is varied inside the creepy rooms within the building, the cellar and attic have an eerie feel and visitors have reported seeing door handles rattling and turning by themselves on many occasions.

There have also been ghost sightings at Charlton House, one being a woman dressed from head to toe in grey, aptly named the 'grey lady', she is often seen carrying something in her arms, which some believe to be her baby. To add fact to this sighting, the small remains of a body were found within an old fireplace during some important restorations within the house.

One former owner Sir William Langhorne, a wealthy East India Merchant purchased Charlton House and lived there until the year 1715 and passed away when he was aged 85. Due to the many strange occurrences here, some believe that his ghost still wanders the building and is the cause of much of the paranormal activity found here.
