Don't confuse this item with the cheaper and much inferior competition that has sprung up in recent years. This is the original Maggiolina Airlanda from Auto home, Italy, which raises and lowers via a simple system of inbuilt screwjacks and winding a handle which is far more reliable than gas struts and able to withstand far greater wind. The other benefit is that you can't open the tent without the handle - so it is also theft proof! It comes complete with the Magiolina changing room awning which is a great place to get dressed, and put essential items like the portaloo! It also means you can climb into and out of the tent in the dry and privately. The tent itself takes literally seconds to erect, Just keep the roof roughly level whilst winding the handle. With practice the awning is a 10 minute job max. The mattress is amazingly comfortable (thick memory foam with anti condensation matt underneath) and 130cm x 210 cm wide so plenty big enough for two adults. It is only 30cm high when closed and very aerodynamic, as well as totally waterproof. It weighs just 55kg so if your car has a roof load limit of 60 kg or more (to also take into account the roof bar weight) then you are good to go. It simply bolts onto 2 standard roofbars using the original fittings. The size of the car doesn't matter - these are the ones that they put on minis!. Because it is so light and aerodynamic you can leave it on the car all year round if you want, though it is easy enough to take on and off if required. The awning works well with both an MPV or 4x4, but I guess it would also be fine with any car of a reasonable height, the poles are fully adjustable. The roof is full insulated and the tent material (Dralon) is super tough, totally waterproof, rotproof, breathable and dries super fast - in fact I gather you can put it away wet if you need to and it will dry itself. It has two end windows and two side entrances, all with fly screens. It also comes with the Maggiolina interior LED light and folding lightweight aluminium ladder. We bought it a year ago and have only used it half a dozen times, but absolutely loved it, but unfortunately a knee injury means climbing the ladder now is difficult, so it is a reluctant sale. The tent and awning together cost 2600 GBP new but I am willing to let both go for 1800 GBP ono. This rooftop tent is also the perfect solution for someone with a two berth motor home that wants the flexibility to sleep an extra two people.
