The Velbon PH-157Q is a strong three way all metal pan head with a reliable and confidently designed quick release plate. It is a solid product built to last and is suitable for most digital cameras with a medium zoom lens and for spotting scopes. I used it for mounting an 85 mm, 20 - 60x magnification spotting scope which weighed 1.9 Kg and it is a popular choice for many starting bird watching.

The pan head is in excellent condition with no faults. There is some minor natural wear on the paint of the quick release plate, which can be seen in the photographs. Purchased in October 2012 it has not been used for the last three years.

Simply twisting the handle in an anti-clockwork direction enables panning of the head in all directions and twisting the handle clockwise locks the pan head at any point desired. This simple and effective no-nonsense operation is a particularly desirable feature when panning a spotting scope for bird and wildlife watching. It should also be appreciated by photographers.

Another useful feature, due to the square base on the quick release plate - which measures 60 x 50 mm - is that the quick release plate can be turned around to create a different width.

The new price of the Velbon PH-157Q on Amazon varies between £32.42 - £40.92 minus post and packaging, while the retail price is £47.99 on the distributor's (Intro2020) website.
