Totally Paranormal Events have their first visit to the Thorne Former Workhouse, Doncaster on Saturday 11th August 2018 and we would love it if you'd join us.

It's £25 per person...£10 deposit payable now with balance to be paid on the night. There are only 15 tickets available.

Thorne Union Workhouse was originally built in 1838 on a site to the west of Thorne and was to house up to 200 inmates. A casual block was built to the east of this site and an infirmary was built to the west and this had a mortuary behind it.
By the end of the1920's the workhouse could house approx 111 inmates, with the average occupancy coming in at around around 80.When the 1930's arrived it could house up to 108 inmates including 29 males and 5 females in the casual wards but this thought to be too small an establishment and was eventually closed a few years later.
During 1940 the workhouse was used for military accommodation until 1944 when the local unit of the Sea Cadets used the front part of the house. The part used by the Sea Cadets now was the Social Club for C F Taylors (Wool spinners) based at Shipley, Yorkshire. A mill at the top of Brook Street was the Thorne branch - now closed. The club eventually closed and the Sea Cadets took it over. The building is now used by TS Gambia The Sea Cadet Corps (Unit 334).
The main part of the Workhouse was destroyed. The Infirmary part, now a residential home, was used as a factory for Chilproof knitwear.
Up until the 1960's a small brick mortuary with a massive stone slab stood at the back of the infirmary. Most of the deceased who had laid on this slab were burned in unmarked graves. There was a bell that used to be rung to bring the residents back inside at night and of course this no longer rings...or does it?
