Description:

History
Dogs resembling the Lhasa Apso have been in existence for over 800 years, but it is only in the last century that it has gained its title. It is a breed native to Tibet along with the Tibetan Spaniel, Tibetan Terrier and the Tibetan Mastiff.
Their long coat is to keep out the cold as they originate from Tibet from which Mount Everest rises. Many of these dogs were kept in Monasteries, treated with love and respect by the Monks, as sacred animals. It was thought that if Apso's were put near the body of a deceased, that the souls of the Dalai Lamas (the sovereigns of the country) entered the body of the dogs after they died.
Lhasa is the name of the capital city, and Apso is thought to be a corruption of the word Apso , which means "God like".
Characteristics
They are of an independent nature and can be quite stubborn. They are very loving and affectionate to friends and family, make an excellent family pet and will happily walk miles.
A compact hardy little dog carrying his tail up over his body. His eyes should be dark and oval shaped, not too large and not too small. Their bite should be a reversed scissor bite, with teeth being in a broad and straight line as possible.
When they are in full coat he should have heavy head furnishings with a good fall over the eyes and the top coat should be long, heavy and straight, neither woolly or silky with a moderate undercoat.
Health
Quite a healthy long living dog. Some do have eye problems but thanks to eye testing it can be kept at bay. Be sure to see a history of eye tests behind the dog on his pedigree shown as ( PRA Clear), and there should be no problem. Make sure all the vaccinations are done on a new animal at eight weeks old to make sure he is not wide open to illness's that could end in death. With a vet checked puppy and these other things done you should have a healthy long lived puppy.

Their amazing double coat grows right down to the floor, giving them a haughty disdain proud look. They are kind with children because of their gentle nature and are not only a companion dog but also as a therapy dog. Most of all, they love to be with their people. Even novice pet parents and apartment dwellers will find these pups to be excellent furry family.
