Some info about the breed:

Toy Poodles are extremely intelligent and are easily trained. They are agile and graceful as well as smart, and they enjoy and excel in a variety of canine sports, including agility, obedience, and tracking. As the energetic and sprightly Toy Poodle is among the brightest of breeds, it is a pleasure to train eager to please, responsive, alert, sensitive, playful, and lively. As a Toy Poodle owner, you can consider yourself lucky. Your cuddly little breed is not only a generally healthy one, it has a life expectancy of as long as 16 years. Of course, like all purebred dogs, the Toy Poodle does have its share of inheritable health problems.

The Poodle originates in Germany, where it was bred as a water retriever, used by duck hunters. The ancestors of the breed were various water dogs of Europe. The trim, which is sometimes viewed as a fashionable fancy trim for show dogs, is in fact traditional and very practical: the hindquarters being clipped to aid the dog's propulsion in swimming and the protective bands of hair (now fancifully called pom-poms) left on the joints and tip of the tail for protection from cold. The Kennel Club recognises three varieties, differentiated by size. All share the same standard. The Miniature and the Toy varieties are a result of scaling down and capturing the same features in a smaller mould.Toy Poodles are extremely intelligent and are easily trained. This breed is very dedicated to its family.Toy Poodles are extremely intelligent and are easily trained. They are agile and graceful as well as smart, and they enjoy and excel in a variety of canine sports, including agility, obedience, and tracking.Facts Every Toy Poodle Owner Should KnowThe smallest of the Poodles, your Toy is a highly trainable, very intelligent, athletic, and versatile breed. While you might have chosen a Toy Poodle because they are lovable and loyal companions and excellent dogs for small living spaces, your dog's ancestors were considerably larger. In fact, toy poodles were bred from the larger, Standard Poodle. Standard Poodle traitsinclude their propensity toward water. This explains the classic, pom-pom poodle cut--a functional style that kept the standard poodle streamlined in the water, but warm at the joints and organ areas. To be a true Toy, your Poodle must be 10 inches or under (at the shoulder), and weigh between 6 and 9 pounds. Their curly coats appear in many colors, from apricot and to black-and-white and shades in between. While the coat is relatively shed-free (making them a good dog for allergy sufferers), it needs to be clipped and groomed every four to six weeks.Unusually alert and sensitiveYou've probably already discovered that your Toy Poodle is a sensitive dog that wants to be a member of the family. The breed has an uncanny ability to read body language and anticipate owner commands, sometimes acting before you speak or gesture. But this sensitivity can also make some toys skittish, snappy, or territorial. They may be quick to bark and act suspicious of strangers. The Toy Poodle is generally a healthy breed, although they are prone to watery eyes, digestive problems, heart disorders, and skin conditions. Still, you can plan on many good years with your Toy because their life expectancy is generally between 12-16 years. As with all dogs, regular visits to your vet will help ensure that you have a healthy pet for years to come. The toy Poodle has a superb personality which explains their immense popularity. They are very adaptable and can thrive in an urban environment if given daily walks. If you are looking for a dog to have in your apartment this is a good pick as long as they still get outdoor exercise.Toy Poodles are companion dogs and will require companionship from you. If they are left alone for long periods of time they could develop separation anxiety. This is not a breed that is suitable to be left alone the entire day and will get anxious and possibly destructive if this happens. They are inquisitive and very trainable ,they are eager to please and love working alongside humans.Due to their low aggression levels, they are a safe and curious breed to have around others.Their ability to socialize with other animals humans and children relates to their friendly nature. However, since they are very small, they could easily be hurt by another animal or young child. The toy Poodle will make a great companion or family dog for anyone that wants an intelligent and agile smaller dog. They will be a very rewarding and affectionate dog if you are willing to provide them with physical and mental challenges. The Toy Poodle is remarkably intelligent. Highly responsive, it is said to be one of the most trainable breeds. Sweet, cheerful, perky and lively, it likes to be with people. Delightful, very amusing and keen. Socialize these dogs well. They make very good watchdogs for their size.Professional grooming will be required every couple of weeks and it is a very important part of owning a Poodle. Brushing will also have to be done daily to keep it from matting. As long as their requirements are met they should fit perfectly in a family with older children.Although toy Poodles do enjoy being athletic it is important to keep their small size in mind.Their size can make them prone to injuries if an owner is not careful. Around an hour of daily exercise is enough to keep them happy. One of the main reasons someone might be attracted to a Poodle is their minimal shedding allergy-friendly coat. However, this does come at a cost and this coat will require more clipping and maintenance than many other dogs. You should get accustomed to daily brushing and combing of their curly coat to keep it from matting. It is common for toy Poodle owners to keep their dogs coat short to save some time combing. If you are unfamiliar with grooming a dog with a coat like this you should set up a monthly appointment with your groomer. Two key factors you should keep in mind in terms of your dog's nutrition are size and activity level. When feeding them and monitoring their growth you should keep in mind that males should be between 4-6 pounds and females should be between 3-5 pounds. You should be cautious with table scraps and treats since this could lead to obesity. A high-quality ingredient dog food should be chosen for your toy Poodle. Since they are a small and toy breed, they should be given kibble that is made especially for them. This kibble( We recommend Royal Canine Mini or XXSmall) will likely have less fat and carbohydrates than the food you would feed a larger breed.Nonetheless, you should always consult your vet if you have any questions or concerns regarding your dog's weight and diet.Their intelligence will shine during training and so will the way they gracefully conduct themselves. Like with any dog you bring into your home, it's important to start training early on.The best games for them are water-based games because they are excellent retrievers. They will be the star of agility, obedience, and tracking competitions if given the chance. One of the specific and fun ways to train them is through dog competitions. This can range from showing off their superb brain in an intelligence completion to showing off their swimming skills in dock diving. At home mental enrichment could be from food puzzles, clicker training, or toys.
