Description:

The Maritime Group - National Honours

We are currently seeking nominations for the Queen's New Year and Birthday honours.

Following the closure of the Safety at Sea Group the admin of the nominations process for all maritime sectors will transfer to the Department of The Maritime Association (M.A) and we are writing on their behalf to ask you to consider those personal whose names might be put forward to the Cabinet Office as possible recipients of a national honour in the Queen's New Year & Birthday Honours lists.

Fresh citations from the maritime sector are being sought for this purpose.

The team has set out strategic priorities for the honours process and these are detailed in the attached note. Reflecting these priorities, the maritime association would like to receive recommendations for your colleagues, undoubtedly among the best in their field and achieving more than is expected of them in their role, from all areas of Maritime professional sectors including RNLI, Coastguard, Maritime Sports plus Marine Services & Environmental

Nominations are encouraged for staff at all levels within the industry, particularly for those in manual, clerical or other support roles, who have made an outstanding contribution and had a positive impact on many maritime areas, especially in Safety awareness participation and the supporting fundraising roles.

The M.A is keen to encourage more diversity in the nominations, and would especially welcome recommendations for female candidates, particularly those at frontline level, and for black and ethnic minority candidates.

As well as recognising the exceptional contribution the nominee has made within their given sector, it is important to recognise any involvement they may have had within charitable or voluntary activities, and this should be detailed on the relevant part of the citation form.

All nominations must be made electronically to the M.A on the Cabinet Office citation form or separate files, the Cabinet Office citation form can be downloaded from the link below, together with further guidance on how to write a good honours citation.

Each nomination should be accompanied by at least two letters of support but we would like to see at least four letters from individuals who know, and can comment on the personal impact of, the work of the nominee.

Completed forms and letters of support should be emailed to The Honours Team (click to contact) for consideration to be put forward to the selection committee of the cabinet offices

Please note all information provided will be stored by the maritime association under strict guidelines of the data protection act, thus will be placed within encrypted files.

Part two of citation notes..

Covering a wide range of Maritime sectors.

The Prime Minister's strategic priorities for honours across all Government departments state that the system should especially honour those who:

Create jobs and economic activity across the country, and support a global, outward-looking Britain;

Support children and young people to achieve their potential, whatever their background;

Aid social mobility, enhancing life opportunities and removing barriers to success;

Give their time to improve their local community; and

Work to tackle discrimination in all its forms.

The Prime Minister has reaffirmed that honours should be awarded on 'merit first' - those who give service above and beyond - and not to those who are just doing their job. He would like to see representation from the length and breadth of the UK.

Priority Areas for Nominations

As normal, we expect that nominations will cover those who have made significant contributions within their chosen areas and as leaders within Maritime sectors. Ministers and the Secretary of State would also like to see individuals recognised who have had an impact in Opportunity Areas or on social mobility more generally.

Ministers and the Secretary of State have expressed concern about the awarding of honours to highly paid roles. Those who are considered to be deserving of an honour should have a very strong case, backed up by data, offering the positive impact which they have achieved at their institution (and more widely where relevant).
