Description:

We are a small charity based in Portishead but working exclusively in Nkoamzi, South Africa, an area with very high rates of HIV and extreme poverty.

We fund the Zakhele Music and Drama group who visit schools and clinics using drama to educate people about important issues. We have also built a library and filled it with over 9,000 books donated by people from North Somerset. Our librarian ensures that the library is used every day.

Our biggest project is currently our after school clubs. These clubs provide a safe refuge every day for 300 of the most vulnerable children in the community, most of whom are orphans. Children come to the clubs for help with homework, sessions in gardening, cooking, sewing, drama, music and sport, access to the library and a nutritious meal. We employ six facilitators to run the clubs and a wonderful social worker who monitors the children's well-being and identifies further areas of need. These clubs provide an invaluable haven of support, advice and fun in the chaotic lives of these vulnerable children.

There are just four of us who meet weekly to oversee our projects. None of us receive a salary and we have virtually no overheads so every penny we raise goes to support our projects. We really need more volunteers to come on board to help us continue our work. You could work from home and/or you could join us at our weekly meetings in Portishead. And you can give as much or as little time as you can. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have experience in website management, fundraising and grant applications.
