Description:

I am selling this vintage billiards table for my locale club to raise money for the club. Which is run buy volunteers it was donated to the club 1936 By the Royal British legion for the serving men at the men's club as far as we can tell by the older members of the village how remember playing on it in a tin shed building before the club was revamped. The billiard tables will need dismantling and collecting at your own expense. you can have the hanging light and all balls and bits that come with the table. The table was recovered about 10 years ago but it is still in good condition .the score board is also included . It will be a shame to see it go but space is needed. And the youngster of the village don't play it. We know the slate is worth more than £150if we were to break it up and probably sell it for the slate and wooden legs and wood but me and the club would proffer it to go somewhere where it will still be used. We have been told The table is rare as it's a full size billiard table and in good condition. And the table is kept covered

I have also attached a copy of a email sent to one of our members from our locale heritage museum in the village. i can email the news clippings that are mentioned in the email. We can help with carrying it out and down stairs as it has 5 large slate pieces.

This is the email that was sent to us.
I have been trawling through my 'Aldbourne' extracts from the British Newspaper Archive. I have found the attached newspaper reports all from the North Wilts Herald. To keep the email size down, I will split over two emails.

Please see attached sequence of newspaper cuttings referring to 'Billiards'. The very earliest 1925 refers to a table situated elsewhere than in the Memorial Hall. The table was a full size table.

In Feb 1936 the Aldbourne - v - Ramsbury match was 'played in Mr A J Palmer's room'. Not sure where/what that was except that it may have been adjacent to the Memorial Hall.

A renovated full size table was acquired sometime in 1936 such that by the time of the first AGM of the newly formed 'Aldbourne Young Men's Club' in late September 1937, the 'new' table was specifically mentioned (see two part article of 1st Oct 1937).

Inter-club games were being held in 1938 on the 'full size table' and the 'small table'. It seems unlikely that either would have been permanently installed in the main Memorial Hall so adjacent room(s) muct have been available.

I know that around 1940/41 the YMC was finding it hard to function because the 'Memorial Hall' had been requisitioned for war use but may have become available again at times later in WW2.

My conclusion is that a full size table (renovated) was acquired in 1936.

I am not aware of any later newspaper references to billiards/snooker in Aldbourne but of course the activity did continue and may be reported elsewhere e.g. Parish News etc.
