FAQs about selling puppies

How do I post a puppy advert on Freeads?

  • To post a puppy advert on Freeads:
  • Click the "Post a FREE ad" button anywhere on the website.
  • Select the puppies category and then choose your puppies breed.
  • Fill the sections out with detailed information.
  • Add some clear photos, including one of the puppies with their mother (this is a requirement for all puppies aged under 6 months old).
  • Include a video to show buyers your puppies interacting with litter mates and mum dog.
  • Add litter details for individual puppies to let buyers choose a puppy prior to contacting you.

What legal requirements are there for selling puppies in the UK?

  • When advertising a puppy or litter:
  • You must ensure they are at least 8 weeks old, before they are rehomed.
  • All puppies require microchipping and the details should be changed to the new owners upon rehoming.
  • If you breed 3 or more litters in 12 months, you may require a license from your local authority.
  • You must include your license number on your advert (if you have one).

How can I ensure my advert meets Freeads pet posting guidelines?

  • To ensure you are complying with Freeads policies:
  • Only a breeder who owns the mother can advertise a puppy under 6 months old.
  • You must include a photo of mum and pups if under 6 months old.
  • Do not advertise puppies as FREE, this is against Freeads welfare policies.
  • Make sure puppies are fully weaned from mother before they are rehomed.

Deposits for puppies, can I have these?

  • Yes, deposits are ok with Freeads and our "Free for breeders" deposit scheme (PetSafe) is available on all puppy adverts, should you choose to accept it. We offer faster payouts and FREE featured ad credits for each completed PetSafe deposit.

What documents should I give to a puppy buyer?

  • You should always provide at the point of collection:
  • A puppy sales contract (with any terms you both agree to).
  • Microchip details (you should change these to the new owner when they collect).
  • Any health records and vaccination history.
  • Information on the puppies worming and flea protection.
  • All pedigree papers (if advertised as included).

How can I ensure I only match the best buyers to my puppies?

  • To make sure you are dealing with the best forever families:
  • Ask a lot of questions, find out about the buyer's lifestyle, their type of home and any experience they have of puppy raising and ownership.
  • Make sure all buyers visit the puppy at your home and more than once if possible.
  • If you feel the buyers are not a good match, don't be afraid to say no.

Do Freeads have any restrictions on rehoming fees?

  • Whilst Freeads do not have an upper limit on rehoming fees, we encourage breeders to check the current average prices to ensure they are not pricing themselves out of the rehoming process. Freeads do however, have a minimum rehoming fee of £50. Any puppies advertised for less than this or FREE, would be removed in line with Freeads policies and PAAG guidelines.

Are there any restrictions on advertising certain breeds?

  • Yes, Freeads do not permit the advertising of any animal named under the dangerous dogs act. Mixed breed variants of dogs banned under this act will also not be accepted on Freeads.

How can I make my ad stand out to buyers on Freeads?

  • If you want to attract more buyers:
  • Use great quality photos and a clear video of your puppies.
  • Provide as much information in the description as possible.
  • Add litter details for each of your puppies.
  • Use a Featured ad upgrade or a daily boost to get your ad noticed.
